The Statistics

According to the National Institute of Mental Health,  an estimated 16.2 million adults in the United States suffered from at least one depressive episode (in the year 2016). According to the CDC, during the period between 2009 and 2012, 7.6% of Americans suffered from severe depression symptoms.

Although depression affects both men and women, about twice as many women are diagnosed with depression compared to men. Women are also more likely to experience co-occurring anxiety with depression while men are more likely to experience co-occurring alcohol abuse.

Children and adolescents can also suffer from depression. For girls, having a mother who has suffered from depression increases her risk of developing depression in adolescence and young adulthood. Among children and adolescents, girls are more likely than boys to report depression symptoms. However, young boys who experience increased levels of sadness and nervousness are at a greater risk to develop depression when they get older.
